Crocheted Teeny Butterflies

Above, the crocheted Teeny Butterfllies are shown with a dime to show their size. These Butterflies were worked with size 20 yarn and a size 10 crochet hook.


Legend:
CH = chain
SC = single crochet
HDC = half double crochet
DC = double crochet
SL ST = slip stitch


Special Stitches:

Picot is a decorative stitch.

Small Picot :  CH 3, SL ST in top of last stitch before chain began.
Large Picot:  CH 5, SL ST in top of last stitch before chain began.

Slip Stitch Cluster:

SL ST in 2nd chain from hook, CH 1, SL ST in same chain as before, CH1, SL ST around base of Slip Stitch Cluster (to make rounded end of antennae)


Note:  One back wing and one front wing are worked completely in the 3rd chain of the initial 4 chains, and the other front wing and back wing are worked in the 1st chain of the initial 4 chains.


Pattern:

Loosely CH 4.

1st Back Wing:  In second chain from hook (3rd chain made) (SL ST, CH 1, 2 HDC, small picot, HDC, CH1, SL ST)
1st Front Wing:  In same chain continue working with (CH 1, SC, HDC, DC, large picot, HDC, SC, CH 1, SL ST, CH 1)

2nd Front Wing:  In initial chain (SL ST, CH 1, SC, HDC, DC, large picot, HDC, SC, CH 1, SL ST, CH 1)
2nd Back Wing:  In same chain, conitnue working with  (SL ST, CH 1, 2 HDC, small picot, HDC, CH1, SL ST)

Join with 1st Back Wing with SL ST.  Cut and end.

Body and Antennae:
Cut a strand of yarn, length varies according to size of yarn.  Needs to be long enough to wrap around body and make chains and Slip Stitch Clusters for both Antennae.

Body:
Fold strand of yarn in half, wrap around center of Butterfly between Wings for Body with loop from fold between Front Wings, pull ends through loop of center fold of yarn.  Work each Antenna with one side of the strand of yarn, starting close to the body.

Antennae:
Work with one side of strand of yarn around hook from inside the loop, SL ST around the loop. CH 6, work Slip Stitch Cluster.  Cut and end.


These can be stiffened using Stiffy (found near the Mod Podge in craft stores). Just use a sponge brush, apply to both sides and allow to dry.
